What are Skin Tumors?
Skin tumors are abnormal lumps of tissue. They can be cancerous or noncancerous and are more common in the elderly population. The exact causes of these tumors are unknown, but people with a family history of skin tumors are more prone to develop them.
Types of Tumors
Some of the common types of benign tumors include
- Warts: Small bumpy growths caused by a viral infection
- Nevi: Birthmarks or moles
- Seborrheic keratosis: Brown, black, or light skin color growths with a slightly raised appearance
Procedure for Treating Skin Tumor
Some of the common procedures to treat skin tumors include:
- Surgical excision: An incision is made into the skin and the growth is excised. The remaining wound is closed with stitches.
- Cryosurgery: Extreme cold (liquid nitrogen) is applied right onto the skin to freeze the diseased area.
- Curettage and electrodesiccation: A surgical instrument shaped like a scoop is used to scrape away the diseased tissue. An electrosurgery device is then used to cauterize the wound and stop bleeding.
